 THE BIDDLE MOOR MEN

a Trent tale

The source of the Trent lies in the Staffordshire moorlands near to Biddulph Moor where St. Laurence Church houses some coffin lids of eastern origin, way out of place in this remote area.

When Orm of Biddulph returned from the 3rd Crusade in 1192 he brought with him a group of Middle Eastern stonemasons who camped on Biddulph Moor and helped with the construction of St. Chad’s in Stafford.

Payim, one of Orm’s Saracens, was made bailiff of the estate and went on to marry a local girl.

Those, with a surname of Bailey, claim to be descended from them.
