Being Humpty Dumpty Is Not Easy

During the English Civil War Royalist Colchester had a castle and several churches protected by the town wall from the Roundheads. A large cannon, Humpty Dumpty, was placed strategically on the wall as part of the defence.

In the siege of 1648 a shot from a Parliamentary cannon damaged the wall sending Humpty Dumpty tumbling to the ground. The Cavaliers tried to raise it onto another part of the wall but the cannon was so heavy ‘that all the King’s horses and all the King’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again’.

And I thought he was a wobbly egg.
